How it works

Measured tongue weight divided by total loaded trailer weight, multiplied by 100, gives the percentage. The common 10–15% reference applies to conventional trailers, subject to their instructions. Multiply loaded weight by 0.10 and 0.15 for that range. Leave the measured value blank to plan a range without pretending the actual load is known.

Worked example

A trailer weighing 3,000 lb loaded with a measured 360 lb tongue load has a 12% share. The typical range is 300–450 lb. That result alone does not approve a 350 lb-rated receiver or confirm axle/tire limits. A 240 lb measurement would be 8%, below the reference.

Measure the setup you will tow

Use suitable rated measuring equipment and its instructions, with the trailer loaded for the trip and at the specified coupler height. Moving cargo changes distribution; measure again after changes. Confirm tow-vehicle payload, rear axle, receiver, hitch, coupler and trailer limits. A weight-distribution hitch has its own procedures; do not apply this percentage as proof that adjustment is correct.

CURT’s tongue-weight measuring guidance supplies the conventional-trailer reference. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck targets are different and are deliberately not calculated here.

Frequently asked questions

Do I divide by GVWR or actual loaded trailer weight?

Use actual total loaded trailer weight for the measured percentage. GVWR is a maximum rating, not necessarily today’s trailer weight.

Does 12% mean the setup is safe?

No. The measured share is one loading screen. Manufacturer instructions, hitch and tow-vehicle payload limits, axle/tire loads and securement still apply.

What if my hitch limit is below the range?

The rating still controls. Do not simply move cargo rearward to chase a low tongue load; resolve the complete loading and equipment plan using manufacturer guidance.

Can I leave tongue weight blank?

Yes. The page then shows only the reference range, clearly marks the measurement unknown and gives no within-range verdict.
