LOAD PLANNING

Payload Calculator

Build a weight budget using your vehicle’s rated total capacity. Include every person and each added load.

Your measurements

Use the total vehicle capacity from your manual, not only the cargo-bed rating.

Follow the manufacturer’s definition of payload. If fuel is included in its rated operating weight, do not count fuel again.

Check individual load limits

Total payload headroom does not replace bed, rack, seat, hitch, tire or axle limits. Secure the load and follow the manual’s distribution and towing rules. Use approved seating only.

How it works, examples & questions

How this calculator works

Used payload = operator/passengers + cargo + added accessories + tongue weight. Remaining payload = rated capacity − used payload. Used percentage = used payload ÷ rated capacity × 100.

Worked example

A 1,000 lb rating with 360 lb of riders, 200 lb of cargo, 100 lb of accessories, and 75 lb of tongue weight leaves 265 lb of total-capacity headroom.

Reference: Polaris hauling and towing guidance. Always use your own model’s manual.

Common questions

Does trailer weight count as payload?

The tongue load supported by the machine generally contributes to its load budget. The entire trailer weight is a separate towing check. Follow the exact limits and definitions in your owner’s manual.

Total payload is different from cargo-bed capacity

Start with the exact rating and definition in your machine’s applicable manual or label. A cargo-bed or rack rating is not automatically the total vehicle payload. Do not enter a bed capacity as the total rating and assume it covers passengers, added accessories and supported tongue load. The payload guide explains those separate load budgets.

Account for equipment actually carried: riders and riding gear, installed accessories, cargo and the trailer tongue load supported by the machine. Use the manufacturer’s definitions to avoid counting an item twice or excluding it. A stock dry-weight specification cannot tell you the weight of your loaded setup.

Remaining arithmetic capacity does not establish acceptable load distribution, axle limits or permission to carry that load on every slope. When towing, run the separate towing comparison with the official towing rating and loaded trailer weight. Keep towing capacity, supported hitch load and vehicle payload as distinct checks.

Rhino USA ratchet tie-down straps — 4-pack

Compare the exact strap length, hook style and working load limit with your anchor points and restraint plan. A minimum breaking strength is not a working load limit. Four straps alone do not establish safe securement.
