ATV & UTV Payload: Riders, Cargo, Accessories & Tongue Weight

Understand total payload versus cargo-bed capacity and build a weight budget for riders, cargo, accessories, and towing tongue load.

Find total vehicle capacity

The cargo-bed rating is not necessarily the vehicle’s total payload capacity. Locate the exact model and year’s weight-capacity section in the owner’s manual. Read how the manufacturer defines the rating and which items it includes. Avoid combining unrelated published limits into an invented total capacity.

Account for people and added equipment

Include the operator and every approved passenger, with riding gear. Added roofs, winches, racks, storage boxes, and other accessories can consume available capacity. List the items that are not already included in the rated vehicle weight. If the manufacturer’s operating-weight definition includes fuel, adding that same fuel again would double-count it.

Separate tongue load from trailer weight

Tongue weight is the load a trailer places on the towing machine’s hitch. It can contribute to the machine’s load budget while the trailer’s entire loaded weight is subject to a separate towing rating. Check both limits in the manual. The payload calculator takes tongue load as a known input and does not estimate it from trailer weight.

Work through a budget

Suppose the rated capacity is 1,000 lb. Riders weigh 360 lb, cargo weighs 200 lb, accessories add 100 lb, and the trailer adds 75 lb of tongue load. Total accounted payload is 735 lb, leaving 265 lb against the overall rating. This arithmetic does not verify whether a particular rack, cargo bed, axle, tire, or hitch is within its own limit.

Use remaining capacity carefully

Secure loads and follow the specified loading distribution. Avoid placing heavy cargo high or far from the recommended location. Follow towing and speed restrictions for the machine and conditions. Capacity headroom is useful information, but it is not permission to carry passengers in unapproved positions or exceed a component’s individual rating.
