Prefer the manufacturer’s GVWR when available; do not enter dry weight.

The multiplier is a sizing heuristic, not a calculation of actual recovery force.

Mud, slopes and rope layers affect required and available pull. Match mounts, electrical supply, anchors and recovery equipment to manufacturer instructions. Keep people clear; never use a vehicle winch to lift people or suspend loads.

How it works, examples & questions

How this calculator works

Planning line pull = entered vehicle weight × selected multiplier. The suggested rating rounds upward to a common capacity from 2,000 to 6,000 lb, or calls for a higher-rated winch if needed.

Worked example

At 2,000 lb and a 1.5 multiplier, the planning minimum is 3,000 lb. A 2.0 multiplier gives 4,000 lb. This is a starting selection figure; recovery conditions still matter.

Reference: WARN winch selection guidance. The 2.0 option is an additional planning scenario offered by this tool.

Common questions

Is a 1.5 multiplier a guarantee?

No. It is a common selection baseline. Actual recovery force varies, and a larger winch does not make unsafe anchors, mounts, or rigging safe.

Are the results stored or sent anywhere?

No. Your entries are used in your browser for this calculation. Calculator entries are not saved. Optional My Machine and checklist preferences are stored locally as described in our privacy policy.

Use loaded weight and keep the rating in context

Use the planned recovery weight rather than assuming published dry weight describes the whole setup. Accessories, cargo and fluids can change that input. When the exact loaded weight is unknown, the calculator’s example remains only an example. The winch selection guide explains the weight-based starting point.

The multiplier creates a selection baseline. It does not calculate extraction force from mud, a slope or a stuck wheel. A rounded rating above the baseline also does not verify the mount, electrical supply, anchor or every piece of recovery equipment. Read the 3,500, 4,500 and 5,500 lb rating comparison with those limits in mind.

Rated line pull and available pull can differ with rope layers and the exact winch’s performance chart. A pulley changes system forces and introduces additional requirements; it is not a universal shortcut to doubling every rating. The rope and pulley reference explains the distinctions. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s procedures and qualified recovery training.

Rhino USA recovery rope or strap kit

Kinetic rope kits and tow-strap/shackle bundles are different products. Rhino states its tow strap is not intended for snatch recovery. Match the exact instructions, dimensions, components and rated recovery points; neither option is a cargo tie-down or a universal ATV/UTV setup.
