How the calculation works
Loaded trailer weight = empty trailer weight + cargo + added equipment. Rating headroom = official towing capacity − loaded trailer weight. Rating used = loaded trailer weight ÷ towing capacity × 100. Tongue load is part of the loaded trailer weight and is not added again.
Worked example
With an entered 1,500 lb towing rating, a 400 lb trailer, 700 lb of cargo, and 50 lb of added equipment, loaded trailer weight is 1,150 lb. This uses 76.67% of the rating and leaves 350 lb of arithmetic headroom.
Keep towing and payload separate
The trailer’s full loaded weight is compared with towing capacity. The tongue load supported by the UTV also consumes payload according to the manufacturer’s definition. Do not count that tongue load twice in trailer gross weight. Use the Payload Calculator to check the supported load on the machine.
Use actual loaded weights
Include fuel, tools, ramps, and accessories that are not already included in the empty trailer measurement. A weigh scale is more reliable than incomplete catalog weights. This tool does not supply a universal tongue-weight target or replace the manufacturer’s loading guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the towing rating come from?
Your exact model/year owner’s manual or another verified manufacturer document. This site does not invent a rating.
Is the optional tongue limit a recommended percentage?
No. Enter the official tongue-load rating. The percentage shown is descriptive; it is not a recommended distribution.
What if the official towing capacity is zero?
Do not tow. The calculator requires a positive rated capacity and cannot authorize towing where the manufacturer prohibits it.
